Redundancy...

Posted by Picasa

Tonight I went for a Thai meal at a restaurant owned by a charming Romanian lady and her 32 year-old son. His wife left him a few months ago to return to Romania. Hard work had broken Carmelle's back.
Nowadays, both mother and son work seven days a week.

The crispy squid was crusty. The tempura king prawns had been tampered with and ended up tasting like doughnuts.

How could I complain? I was their only customer for the evening. I could’ve destroyed their confidence! “Tonight, 100% of our customers complained!”

So, I just gouged the prawns out of the thick batter and pretended I was on a diet!

Anna asked why I wasn’t at work. I explained, in between sighs and sips of Thai beer, that I was no longer needed nor wanted!

It’s only half the truth, really! I had already done my rounds and checked on our restaurants earlier.

I honestly thought that I would be at Casa helping set it up for at least another 3 months. But the Spanish holiday spelt my redundancy!

I need to start scheming! I need something to do! Another project, another interest…

But what?
I hope that my blogfriends have a few suggestions!

No more restaurants or mosaics please!

Are you taking up fire-eating?

I think you should set up an international recipe blog that everyone could contribute to.

Or if you have had enough of blogging, go further with your photography! Join lots of Flickr groups, some of them set people photography projects...

Hayden, I can imagine what that idea might be...Anything to do with illustrations, by any chance?

Poetry, Cadiz? Not very productive, really! I'll give it a go.

Annie, your recipe blog idea is a good one! I'll give it some thought.
But I am really after ideas for a new hands-on project.
Oh, I still love blogging and that'll be the last thing to drop.

Restaurant critic perhaps? Build a miniature ship in a bottle? write a book? Travel the world? Start a honey farm?

Hobbes, are all those your wishes? Can't imagine messing around with bees even though I love honey!

Hayden, motivation is what I need!

KG, we are right on the Marina, surrounded by boats. The Med maybe not the North Sea coast! From Whitby to Lindisfarne there are no gentle breezes, you should know!

i'm with janet, you should write a cookbook, but not just recepies and stuff, but recepies and stories .... sorta like this one "Islands in the Sun cookbook" by Marlena Spieler

-though somehow i think you already know what you want to do..so why dont you come out and tell us

Janet and Ale, I don't think I have the patience to write a book! My attention span is not long enough! Get bored very easily.
Maybe a cookery blog, where you lot could contribute to! That's a thought,eh!
I can assure you, Ale that if I knew what I wanted to do, I would've done it by now!

Stop being so darn efficient and wise when choosing and training employees and you'll always have a job (putting out fires).
Or you could come to Belize and help Bigness and I move/recreate the cafe in the beachfront space when the pastafarian's lease is up (March 2007) tick tock

Maybe you could take over the Thai restaurant when the sweet Romanian lady and her son go bankrupt, as they inevitably will by the sound of it. ( It's such a shame how some places get it so right, and others seem to get it oh so wrong).

You could be the Kofi Annan of Seaton Carew's United Nations Restaurant Chain.

Cherry, I like my Kofi very strong, you know!
I can assure you that after 21 years in the business I don't know why some succeed and others fail!

Volunteer work, Christine?
Count me in!
Thanks for the confidence!

Have you decided what you'd like to do now, Cream? Something that you and only you can do? Volunteer work sounds wonderful, but the key is to find something that you would enjoy.

Gigi, exactly! I get bored so easily that I wouldn't want to commit myself to anybody else or any other cause. It would have to be something I enjoy and if it benefits others then all the better!

Thanks, Val!
